Why I Built Uncomplicated Finance

Business numbers don't have to be complicated.

Running a business means making decisions every day.

Some are big decisions. Some are small.

But quite often, the information you need to make those decisions is buried somewhere in your accounts, spreadsheets, bank statements or accounting software.

The questions themselves are usually much simpler:

Am I making enough money?

Are my costs getting out of control?

Am I charging enough?

How much do I actually need to sell?

Where is the cash going?

I've been self-employed since 1999, and I've asked plenty of those questions myself.

I've built businesses, made decisions that worked, made decisions that didn't, and experienced what happens when things don't go according to plan.

One thing I've learned is that turnover doesn't necessarily mean you're making money.

A business can be busy and still struggle.

It can have plenty of sales and still run short of cash.

And sometimes a relatively small change in one number can make a surprisingly big difference.

Start with the problem

That's really where the idea for Uncomplicated Finance came from.

I've always believed that if you want to understand something, start with the problem you're trying to solve.

Not the spreadsheet.

Not the terminology.

The problem.

If your costs have gone up, you probably don't need someone to tell you your overhead percentage.

You need to know:

What's gone up?

Why has it gone up?

And what is it doing to my business?

If your profit has fallen, the question is:

What's changed?

Sales?

Direct costs?

Wages?

Other overheads?

Once you can see what's happening, you can start working out why.

And then you can decide what, if anything, you want to change.
