WHAT IS IT?
An investment is money put into an asset or financial product with the aim of generating a return over time.
IN PLAIN ENGLISH
Instead of simply holding money, you are putting it somewhere where its value or income may change.
SIMPLE EXAMPLE
A stocks and shares investment could rise or fall in value. A long-term illustration might assume 5% annual growth, but actual returns can be different and are not guaranteed.
WHY DOES IT MATTER
Investing involves risk. Understanding the timeframe, objective and possible ups and downs matters.
THE ROCKET TEST
Investing puts money at risk in the hope of achieving a return over time.
